Can a cough medicine be a breakthrough in treating Parkinson's?

Ambroxol is a cough medicine commonly used in Europe; it promotes the clearance of mucus, and reduces inflammation. Laboratory research showed us that it could also have neuroprotective properties - that it could protect brain cells by helping them breakdown and clear waste proteins more effectively.

So, in 2022 we are going to invest £5.4m to test ambroxol in a large clinical trial that will involve 330 patients across the UK, to determine if it can slow or stop Parkinson's - our biggest single commitment towards finding a cure for Parkinson's to date. Thank you for your support.
